The last midterm convention was held in 1982, when Democrats staged a three day event in Philadelphia. Three years later, party Chairman Paul Kirk Jr scrapped future midterm conventions, calling them “places for mischief.”
The conventions, which began in 1974, had become a breeding ground for future presidential candidates. In 1978, President Carter delivered a speech on the opening night to a “tepid” reception, teeing up Sen. Edward Kennedy for one of the “most rousing speeches of his career” two nights later.
A total of three “Democratic Midterm Conferences” were held. Tonight’s Republican National Convention will be the fourth held by a major party in U.S. history.
