Fiji is the 13th country most affected by extreme weather events. To better prepare for hurricane season, the island nation is one of several now participating in a project to integrate natural indicators in their early-warning systems.
These include the direction that yams grow, the behavior of bees, or in nearby Vanuatu, the nesting patterns of green turtles (nesting farther inland suggests a hurricane is on its way).
Promoting traditional weather knowledge can help communities that are too small or remote for expensive monitoring equipment available on larger islands.
